Minden, Westfälisch-M. oder M. in Westfalen, Hauptstadt des Reg.-Bez. M. (5261 qkm, 1900: 636.875 [1905: 687.269] E., 1 Stadt-, 10 Landkreise) der preuß. Prov. Westfalen, Stadtkreis und Kreisstadt l. an der Weser, 24.315 (1905: 25.428) E., Garnison, Amtsgericht, Oberpostdirektion, Reichsbankstelle, Handelskammer, frühgot. Dom (13. Jahrh.), Gymnasium, Realgymnasium; bis 1870 Festung; hier 1. Aug. 1759 Sieg des Herzogs Ferdinand von Braunschweig über die Franzosen. Das Bistum M., von Karl d. Gr. 803 gestiftet, kam 1648 als weltliches Fürstentum an Brandenburg. – Vgl. Spannagel (1894), Bölsche (1897).
